Florida is one of the states that is highly prone to natural and man-made hazards. Thus, the government in this state adopts a comprehensive Florida Emergency Alert System. This system can help the government increase the public’s disaster awareness and minimize fatalities during emergencies.

Florida’s emergency warning system comprises several systems focusing on different communication channels. Moreover, some of those systems only disseminate emergency alerts to specific regions or about particular emergencies.

Florida Emergency Alert System: Its Primary Systems

The Florida Emergency Warning System is a platform designed to broadcast emergency alerts to citizens and visitors in specific regions. Authorities will operate this platform prior to or during natural disasters, including wildfires, tropical storms, and extreme heat.

Moreover, authorities may also broadcast alerts to inform people about school closures, road closures, and problems with the utility services. This system adopts a multi-layered safety network to ensure everyone in the threatened areas gets emergency alerts.

Below are the primary emergency alert systems integrated into the Florida Emergency Warning System.

  1. Wireless Emergency Alert System (WEAS)

As the name suggests, the WEAS in Florida only sends mass notifications to cell phones in specific locations. The system uses cellular towers to disseminate a Florida emergency message to local cell phones during an emergency.

These towers can detect cell phones within their radius and send an alert to them. Therefore, the WEAS doesn’t need a database of cell phone numbers or cell phone owners’ subscriptions. Therefore, the privacy of cell phone users is safe.

Moreover, the WEAS can broadcast a wireless emergency alert rapidly. The alert will appear automatically on phone screens. Consequently, users can read the message instantly. Furthermore, cell phones receiving this alert will ring loudly for approximately 10 seconds.

  1. Emergency Alert System (EAS)

The EAS is widely used in the US, including in Florida. This system will automatically interrupt local radio and TV broadcasts to warn audiences about an emergency or a public security threat. The alerts from EAS are ideal for those who are indoors.

  1. Local Mass Notification Systems

Individual Florida counties adopt local mass notification systems to send SMS or email alerts to specific communities within their regions. These systems are typically powered by particular vendors. Moreover, people must subscribe to these systems to receive alerts.

  1. Alyssa’s Alert

Another emergency warning system under the Florida Emergency Alert System is Alyssa’s Alert. This is the mandatory mobile panic alert system integrated into all public schools in this state. This system can instantly connect school staff to first responders.

Types of Emergency Alerts in Florida

Florida’s authorities disseminate various emergency alert types for different purposes. The Florida emergency alert types are as follows.

  • AMBER Alerts: Authorities issue these alerts when they try to find abducted children. However, the authorities don’t broadcast all child abductions via AMBER alerts. They only broadcast a child abduction if the abducted child is in grave danger and the case is a confirmed abduction.

  • Missing Child Alerts: Missing child alerts are not the same as AMBER alerts. The former is for various cases of missing children. Authorities typically use this alert type if the missing child case doesn’t meet all the criteria for AMBER alerts.

  • Silver Alerts: Florida’s authorities will activate Silver Alerts when there is a missing adult. The missing person typically is a senior citizen aged over 60 and suffers from cognitive impairments, such as dementia.

  • Purple Alerts: Purple Alerts inform people about missing adults who suffer from mental illness, physical disability, or cognitive impairments, except dementia and Alzheimer’s, and may be in danger.

  • Blue Alerts: Blue Alerts are part of Law Enforcement Safety Alerts. The authorities will activate Blue Alerts when someone kills, seriously injures, or abducts a law enforcement officer, and he is still roaming freely in Florida, and may cause a public safety threat.

  • Presidential Alerts: Presidential Alerts are for national emergencies. Moreover, the issuer of these alerts is not the local authorities, but the US President.

  • Imminent Threat Alerts: The National Weather Service will issue an Imminent Threat Alert when there is an immediate severe hazard. Examples of the imminent threats that cause the NWS to issue these alerts are tornadoes, hurricanes, and flash floods.

  • Public Safety Alerts: These alerts are for conditions that are less severe than imminent threats above. The alerts are generally for evacuation orders, severe weather watches, local road closures, or other information about non-life-threatening hazards.

The Florida Emergency Alert System contains several platforms for different alert broadcast channels. One of its essential platforms is the wireless emergency alert system. This system is effective for alerting people indoors and outdoors. Moreover, establishing this system is easy if authorities have a wireless broadcast machine from smsbroadcaster.com.
