Latest Indonesia Volcano Eruption Unleashed 6-km High Ash Clouds

Indonesia is a country with numerous active volcanoes. Therefore, it is not surprising that many active volcanoes in this country are in alert status. One of them is Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki. This volcano erupted a few weeks ago. Thankfully, the latest Indonesia volcano eruption did not cause fatalities.

Indonesia Volcano Eruption: Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki

Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki is a unique volcano in Flores, Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia. This active volcano has a twin, i.e., Mount Lewotobi Perempuan. According to the report, Mount Lewotobi Perempun erupted twice in the early 1900s.

Meanwhile, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted several times throughout the Indonesian volcano eruption history. Below are the latest eruptions of this volcano during 2024 and 2025.

1. 2024 Eruption

This active volcano erupted twice in 2024. The first eruption was in early January. Before this eruption, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki increased its volcanic activity. There are no reports of fatalities from this eruption.

However, the volcano remained in alert status for months. On November 4, 2024, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki exploded and unleashed a 5,000 m ash column from its summit.

Moreover, the report said Mount Lewotobi erupted lava and other volcanic materials up to 5 km away from its crater. These materials destroyed houses in nearby villages. 

In addition, the eruption caused at least 10 people to die and over 60 people to be injured. The explosion of this volcano also displaced over 12,200 people.

Five days after the 4^th November explosion, the Indonesian volcano erupted again. This time, the ash column of the explosion reached 9 km from the crater. Due to this massive ash column, the government closed the International Komodo Airport.

2. 2025 Eruption

The first Indonesia volcano eruption in 2025 occurred on January 2. Lewotobi Laki-Laki volcano started to unleash ash clouds at noon. Its first ash column was about 1,000 m high from the summit. However, this eruption did not cause casualties.

Mount Lewotobi was showing dynamic volcanic activity for several months after this eruption. In March, this volcano erupted again. The explosion injured two people and forced over 4,000 people to evacuate.

Moreover, Lewotobi exploded again on June 17. This eruption was rather massive. According to the report, the highest ash column from this explosion was 10,000 m high.

It is also reported that this thick gray cloud was visible from regions located 150 km away from Mount Lewotobi. Due to this massive explosion, the local government expanded the danger zone to an 8 km radius from the volcano’s crater.

Thankfully, there were no reports of casualties from this volcanic eruption. However, the government warned its people to be aware of incoming lava mud floods after heavy rains. 

Volcano Eruption at Indonesia: Ile Lewotolok, Raung, and Merapi

The volcanic activities of Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki in 2024 and 2025 seemed to affect the neighboring volcano. Consequently, another active volcano in Flores erupted in June. Meanwhile, volcanoes outside Flores Island also erupted a few months before.  

1. Mount Ili Lewotolok

The most current volcano eruption in Indonesia is from Mount Ili Lewotolok in Flores Island, Nusa Tenggara Timur. The location of this volcano is not far from Mount Lewotobi. A few months ago, authorities increased the volcano alert level to level II.

Mount Ili Lewotolok erupted on June 27, 2025. It was a small explosion since the volcano only unleashed 500 m of ash clouds.  Therefore, it did not cause fatalities or injuries. However, the volcanic ash from the Ili Lewotolok eruption may cause respiratory health problems.

2. Mount Raung

Mount Raung is an active volcano in Banyuwangi, East Java. This volcano is over 4,500 m high and is at alert level II. On the evening of June 17, Mount Raung exploded. The volcano unleashed ash clouds as tall as 1,200 m from the summit.

This eruption did not cause fatalities or injuries. However, local authorities closed the hiking track in Mount Raung due to volcanic ash rain.

3. Mount Merapi

Mount Merapi is an extremely active volcano in Yogyakarta and Central Java. This volcano has been at alert level 3 for 5 years. Mount Merapi erupted several times in 2025. The latest one was in April.

From this small explosion, authorities observed an ash column 1,000 m tall. So far, no fatalities have been reported from Merapi’s 2025 eruption. However, in the past, this volcano has injured and killed many people.
