On November 22, 2025, heavy rains started to pour in most regions of Sumatra, Indonesia. The rains lasted for days. Thus, floods hit three Sumatran provinces at the end of November. These massive Indonesia floods submerged these regions up to 2 m high.

In early December, these floods had not totally subsided in some areas. Moreover, the massive scale of these floods caused the local governments to have difficulties in dealing with this catastrophe. How did these floods impact the lives of Sumatran people?

The Impacts of the 2025 Sumatra Floods

The floods in Sumatra in November 2025 are probably the worst flood in Indonesia. This disaster affected hundreds of villages in the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. In some areas, mudflows came with the floods. Thus, some villages are buried under the mud.

Among those three provinces, North Sumatra, particularly Sibolga, South Tapanuli, and Central Tapanuli districts, suffered the worst impact of the floods. Below are the impacts of this hydrometeorological hazard.

  1. Number of Victims

According to the Indonesia flood data, the 2025 Sumatra floods killed more than 800 people. Moreover, over 500 people are missing, and approximately 2,600 others are injured.

These floods affected more than 3 million people. Furthermore, over 800 people are displaced because of this disaster.  They must live in distressing shelters. They didn’t get enough water, food, clothes, and medication due to the floodwater and damaged roads and bridges.

  1. Damaged Houses and Infrastructure

The 2025 Sumatra, Indonesia floods damaged over 11 thousand houses, buildings, and infrastructure. Consequently, many villages were isolated due to broken bridges and roads.

Moreover, most flooded regions did not get power supplies or communication services. Thus, the victims of this disaster cannot call their families for help or simply to share their condition.

The floods also damaged hundreds of agricultural lands, including over 6 hectares of rice fields. Therefore, many farmers in Aceh, West Sumatra, and North Sumatra suffered from crop failures.

  1. Thousand Tons of Wood Logs

The floods in Sumatra showed a strange phenomenon. During this hazard, thousands of tons of wood logs flew along with the floodwater. Consequently, villages, roads, rivers downstream, and beaches are full of wood logs.

This condition caused the authority to have difficulty accessing the affected areas. Moreover, fishermen in West Sumatra couldn’t go fishing because their boats could not sail between the logs.

  1. Financial Losses

Experts estimated that the Indonesian government suffered an economic loss of over 68 trillion rupiahs. This financial loss will put some pressure on Indonesia's economic growth. Thus, Indonesia may not reach its GDP target of 5.7% this year.

The Causes of the 2025 Sumatra, Indonesia Floods

What causes floods in Indonesia, particularly the 2025 Sumatra floods? Sumatra Island is a flood-prone island. However, the flood risk on this island has increased significantly recently due to many factors.

These factors played an essential role in causing the 2025 Sumatra floods. Below are the causes of this catastrophe.

  1. Extreme Rainfall from Senyar Tropical Storm

Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra experienced extreme rainfall before the floods. The heavy rain lasted for about 5 days. The rainfall ranged between 100mm/day to 400mm/day.

This extreme rainfall was triggered by the Senyar Tropical Storm. The occurrence of this tropical storm was an anomaly because it is not common for this weather phenomenon to happen near the equator.

  1. Massive Deforestation

The massive floods and mudflows in Sumatra were also triggered by massive deforestation. Each of the affected provinces lost  2,000 to 3,000 hectares of forest annually.

The deforestation occurred because of illegal logging, mining, and land clearing for palm plantations. Due to this massive deforestation, these regions lose their natural buffer. Thus, floods easily occurred in those regions.

  1. Land Use Changes on the Downstream

Another trigger of the Sumatra, Indonesia flood disaster is land use changes on the downstream. The government established a power plant on Batang Toru downstream, South Tapanuli.

This development affects slope balance and landscape changes. Consequently, the area has high flood and landslide risks.

How Does the Government Deal with the Floods

The government of Indonesia has done several measures to deal with the 2025 Sumatra floods. In conducting those measures, the central government works with the local governments, the military department, various ministries, and government agencies. Below are some of those measures.

  • Sending Logistics and Medication: The government has sent logistics and medication to the flood victims. Still, the amount of the aid may not be enough due to the difficulties reaching affected regions. So far, the government has used military planes, copters, and trucks to deliver the aid.

  • Weather Modification: The Meteorological Geophysics and Climatology Agency has modified the weather in the affected provinces. Thus, the floods and mudflow did not get worse.

  • Search and Rescue Operations: Several government agencies and the military department have worked hard to conduct search and rescue operations. However, they face various challenges in these operations. Thus, many people still need to be rescued.

The Sumatra, Indonesia floods have killed hundreds of people and left three Sumatra provinces in grave damage. In the future, the Indonesian government must improve its flood early warning system to prevent a similar catastrophe. To improve the system, the government must adopt cell alert technology from smsbroadcaster.com.
