Unabated since the end of 2025, extreme weather has once again struck Indonesia, particularly in Aceh. This region was severely affected and has yet to fully recover. National disaster today are still caused by extreme weather that is worsened by environmental damage. Floods and landslides have returned to several areas in Aceh before conditions are fully solved.

What is National Disaster Today?

Weather conditions in Indonesia are currently unstable. Extreme weather continues, threatening several areas that were previously affected. Floods and landslides affected several areas in Aceh and then threatened again. Some areas are impacted again, while still recovering from the previous disaster.

The first case of a hydrometeorological disaster occurred in Gayo Lues on April 6th, 2026, after heavy rains. The risks automatically increase. The same case also occurred in Central Aceh on April 11th, 2026, specifically in five sub-districts. This disaster occurred after prolonged rains since April 8th. The connecting road is out of access, so four villages were isolated.

The Potential of Hidrometeorological Disasters in Aceh

According to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), there is potential for severe weather and impact on hydrometeorological disasters. These are the detailed predictions.

  1. Two Periods of Hidrometeorological Disaster

The BMKG is the agency authorized to observe and predict natural disasters, taking into account their triggering factors. The result of observation is prediction. The two periods of hydrometeorological disasters in Aceh is on April 11-15th, 2026, for the first, and the second is on April 16-20th, 2026, for the second.

The list of regions that will be predicted in the first period is Aceh Besar, Aceh Jaya, Aceh Tamiang, North Aceh, East Aceh, and Banda Aceh. Langsa, Bireun, Pidie Jaya, Lhokseumawe, Sabang, Aceh Singkil, and Simeulue were also included. Southwest Aceh, West Aceh, Central Aceh, South Aceh, Bener Meriah, Southeast Aceh, Nagan Raya, Pidie, Gayo Lues, and Subulussalam are the listed regions in the second period.

  1. Cyclonic Pattern

The BMKG also explained that another factor causing hydrometeorological disasters is cyclonic patterns. These cyclones create areas of wind deflection. This condition causes strong winds and increases the number of cloud cover areas.

  1. Extreme Weather

Observations are being conducted continuously by the BMKG Class I Sultan Iskandar Muda Meteorological Station. These observations in Aceh have yielded several new facts. Current weather conditions in Aceh are uncertain and have the potential to become extreme due to Kelvin waves, wind shifts, and convergence, increasing the likelihood of rain cloud formation.

Water vapor mass also has the potential to increase due to warmer surface water temperatures in the waters off western Aceh. Rain cloud formation is increasingly optimal. As a result, extreme weather, including moderate to heavy rainfall, can occur suddenly, even in the afternoon and evening.

The Learning Points

Risk mitigation become more effective if implemented an early warning before a disaster occurs. BMKG has committed to giving it. The particular concern is the additional risk of disaster in Aceh if these threats occur. That’s because the affected areas by the disaster in late 2025 have not yet been fully resolved.

Managing natural disasters requires serious and effective action. Therefore, many things need to be improved to ensure disaster management is completed quickly, before the next, more difficult situation occurs. Here are some lessons learned in managing the impact of the national disaster today.

  1. Strengthen Prevention Program

Effective and consistent disaster prevention programs will reduce disaster risk. Some prevention programs that can be implemented are education, outreach, simulations, and environmental conservation. Earthquake-resistant buildings are very important as a precaution in certain vulnerable areas. The function of upland environments and watersheds must not be changed.

  1. Implementing an Effective Handling Program

In disaster mitigation, needed to handle it effectively, such as in evacuation and aid distribution. The realization requires an effective working system from all relevant parties. A clear workflow and precise execution are essential. Planning and budget implementation must be clear and supported by concrete evidence.

  1. Coordinating between National and Regional Governments

Coordination is a basis of cooperation. The role of regional governments is to implement national policies at the regional level, including disaster risk mitigation. If the disaster risk is significant and beyond the capacity of local governments, the central government can assist in accelerating recovery. Disaster management will be accelerated with the coordination of the two levels of government.

  1. Rehabilitation and Reconstruction

Rehabilitation and reconstruction are the next steps after evacuation and aid distribution. Both are post-disaster stages that aim to return conditions to their pre-disaster conditions.

The role of rehabilitation is to improve the quality of life of disaster victims, such as trauma healing, psychological support, refugee areas, and economic recovery. All this brings life back to normal or builds back better. Reconstruction involves permanently rebuilding infrastructure, such as public facilities and facilities, to make them stronger.

  1. Relocation

Relocation can be carried out if the affected area is no longer suitable for habitation. This is done for the safety of the local community. The risks are significant due to the high probability of another disaster hitting the area. Relocation is necessary if necessary.

A comprehensive approach in disaster risk mitigation starts from prevention, response, until recovery. In the case of the national disaster today, a hydrometeorological disaster in Aceh, progress in disaster management remains suboptimal. This situation is extremely dangerous when the next disaster threatens. Unaddressed risks will worsen.

Environmental damage that triggers hydrometeorological disasters also needs to be addressed immediately. Now, an emergency message-sending machine based on SMS (Short Message Service) is ready to use to optimize the early warning system. With a range of up to 2 km for all operators, this system can send messages in real-time and is available at smsbroadcaster.com.
