Recent Floods in Indonesia: Thousands Affected in Many Locations

Since early January 2026, several floods have hit many locations in Indonesia. They affected thousands of people and caused massive economic losses to the country. Recent floods in Indonesia were due to torrential rains, inadequate drainage systems, and river overflows.

List of Recent Floods in Indonesia

Floods are common occurrences during the rainy season in Indonesia. Each year, hundreds of floods occur in this country. In January 2026, authorities reported floods in 8 provinces. Moreover, the floods in each province submerged many locations. Below are the latest Indonesian floods.

1. Cisarua, West Java

The latest Indonesian floods occurred in Cisarua, Bandung Barat Regency, on the night of January 23. The cause of this hazard was long-lasting heavy rains. These extreme rains also triggered landslides in several locations in this region on January 24. 

An early report said these floods and landslides in Indonesia caused 10 fatalities, more than 80 people were missing, and roughly 400 others were displaced. The worst landslide in Cisarua buried roughly 30 houses in Babakan Pasir Kuning Village. 

2. Guci Hot Springs, Central Java

Almost at the same time as the floods and landslides in Cisarua, destructive floods swept the Guci Hot Springs Tourism Area in Central Java. These floods were the second in Guci during this rainy season.

However, the second floods were more devastating than the first. The flash floods destroyed 3 bridges and two hot pools. Moreover, it covers the Guci Tourism Area in thick mud. The floods also damaged one of the trekking routes in Mount Slamet.

So far, authorities have not reported fatalities or injuries due to this hazard. However, the floods had forced tourism activities in Guci to stop, which caused financial losses for the locals.

3. Greater Jakarta 

Greater Jakarta inundations are the most-anticipated floods in Java Indonesia. Greater Jakarta is exceptionally prone to flash floods and tidal floods. Each year, this hazard hits the region several times.

This year, floodwater has submerged several locations in Jakarta since January 22. Moreover, in Bekasi and Tangerang, floods started on January 12. Furthermore, the height of the floodwater varied depending on the location. In Bekasi, the inundation was up to 2 m.

On the other hand, the maximum height of the floodwater in Jakarta was 1.2 m. According to the report, floods inundated at least 143 areas and caused more than 15,000 people to be displaced. 

On January 25, the floodwater in several locations had receded. However, authorities remained alert for potential future floods. Moreover, they had modified the weather to prevent the floods from getting worse. 

4. Sitaro, North Sulawesi

Some of the recent floods in Indonesia were the Sitaro floods in North Sulawesi. On January 5, torrential rains occurred in this region and were followed by flash floods. This hazard affected three subdistricts and killed at least 16 people.

Moreover, this hazard injured 22 and killed three others. The floods swept away 21 houses and damaged 64 others. This hydrometeorological hazard also cut communication lines and road access to those subdistricts.

5. Ogan Kemiring Ulu Timur, South Sumatra

On January 9, extreme rainfall caused flash floods and river overflows in Ogan Kemiring Ulu Timus, South Sumatra. At least 23 villages in four subdistricts experienced flooding. 

At the beginning of the inundation, the height of floodwater reached 1.5 m. These floods affected more than 1,300 people. Hundreds of them must live in shelters for a few days. 

6. West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara 

On the same day, other floods occurred in West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. A river overflowed two villages after heavy rains upstream. According to the report, approximately 250 families were affected by this hazard. 

7. Landak Regency, West Kalimantan

Also on January 9, floods submerged 23 villages in Landak Regency, West Kalimantan, up to 1 m deep. The causes of this hazard were heavy rains accompanied by river overflows.

Due to these floods, more than 2,200 people could not conduct their daily activities. Moreover, the floods cut the road access to several villages.

8. Seluma, Bengkulu

A village in Seluma, Bengkulu, also experienced flooding on the same day after torrential rains. Thankfully, the floods were only 0.5 m deep. This hazard submerged 14 houses and less than 10 hectares of rice fields. 

January 2026 is full of floods in Indonesia. They spread from the western part of the country to the eastern.
