The wet season in Indonesia is characterized by frequent rains. At the beginning of the season, people typically experience light to moderate rain a few days a week. However, during the peak season, heavy rain in Indonesia occurred almost daily.

Rains are both a blessing and a curse. In moderate amounts, rains allow Indonesian farmers to grow crops successfully. However, heavy rainfalls will bring many negative effects to this country.

Heavy Rain in Indonesia: What are the Signs and When Does it Happen?

What is heavy rain? Heavy rain is an intense precipitation, typically exceeding 7.6 mm per hour or 50 mm per day. This weather phenomenon occurs when a large amount of warm, moist air rises rapidly. After that, it cools and forces the moisture to condense into large, dense clouds.

When the clouds are too heavy for air currents to hold, they will produce heavy rain. Before the rain falls, nature typically gives some specific signs.

Signs of Heavy Rain

Many people in Indonesia can recognize the signs of heavy rain from the visual signs. However, nature also gives other indications before torrential rain.

  • Darkening Cloud: The cloud will darken rapidly from grey to black before heavy rain. This cloud is tall and looks like a cauliflower.

  • Hot and Humid Air: The air is typically hot and humid before heavy rain occurs. Sometimes, the hot and humid air lasts for hours, such as from night to the next day. After that, heavy rain falls in the afternoon.

  • Strong Winds: Right before the downpour, the temperature typically decreases sharply. This atmospheric phenomenon is generally followed by strong winds.

  • Sudden Heavy Downpour: The beginning of heavy rain in Indonesia is characterized by sudden heavy downpour. Moreover, the raindrops are large and close together. Furthermore, the rain may last for a short period or several hours.

  • Rain Falling Faster than the Ground Can Absorb: Another characteristic of heavy rain is that the rain falls faster than the ground can absorb. Therefore, water is pooling rapidly on the ground.

When Do Heavy Rains Mostly Happen in Indonesia?

Heavy rains in Indonesia typically occur during the peak of the rainy season and the transitional periods. During those periods, people may also experience extreme weather in Indonesia. This weather is characterized by torrential rains, strong winds, or tornadoes.

However, regions in this country experience the peak of the rainy season and the transitional period differently. Below are the heavy rain months in different Indonesian regions.

  • December and February: Java, Bali, and Nusa Tenggara experience the peak rainy season from December to February. Thus, heavy rains occur during those times in these islands.

  • November to January: The peak of the rainy season in Sumatra and Kalimantan is earlier than that in Java. It occurs from November to January. Therefore, it is not surprising that floods hit Sumatra during those months.

  • January to February:  In Sulawesi and Papua, the peak rainy season is from January to February. This year, Sulawesi experienced the impact of heavy rain in early January.

  • May to June: In Indonesia, May to June is the transition period from the rainy season to the dry season. Some regions may experience this season in April. During this period, people must be cautious of sudden short downpours with tornadoes.

  • October: Meanwhile, the transition period from the dry season to the rainy season is in October. During the transition, Indonesia experiences hot and humid air during the day and heavy rain in the afternoon.

Recent Impact of Heavy Rains in Indonesia

Short-period heavy rains typically decrease visibility and cause the drainage systems to operate near their maximum capacities. However, the effects of heavy rains in Indonesia can be fatal if they last for hours or days. Recently, this weather phenomenon has shown its fatal impact in Indonesia.

  1. Floods

The most common cause for flooding is heavy rain that last for hours or days. Since the end of November 2025, massive floods have hit several regions in Indonesia. The most destructive ones were floods in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra.

Recently, heavy rain in Jakarta also caused inundations in more than 100 locations. The flood submerged these areas at different heights, ranging from 0.5 m to 2 m. Floods also occurred in Tegal, North Sulawesi, and Karawang

  1. Landslides

Another impact of heavy rain in Indonesia is landslides. This hazard recently happened in Cisarua, Bandung, on January 24, 2026. This landslide killed at least 48 people and damaged many houses. Currently, authorities are still conducting evacuation operation.

Heavy rain in Indonesia is a common weather event during the rainy season and the transition period. Sometimes, it lasts for hours and triggers river overflows and flash floods in this country. Therefore, Indonesia must have an effective wireless flood warning system. To set up this system, the government can adopt cell broadcast technology from smsbroadcaster.com.
